Jaap Ravelli (1916-2011)
The ceramic work of Jaap Ravelli undoubtedly belongs to the most recognizable in the Dutch ceramics history of the twentieth century. His company in Valkenburg (ZH), which existed between 1947 and 1977, has been responsible for a large number of – mainly serial – produced articles, playing a major role in decorative design in post-war Netherlands.
Jaap Ravelli was born in 1916 in Princenhage. In his youth he spent several years in the Dutch East Indies and a few years in Curaçao. After having studied at the Rijksopleidingeninstituut voor Tekenleraren in Amsterdam and a year at the Royal Academy for Visual Arts in Amsterdam, Jaap, together with his brother Dick (1919-1980), took the first steps in the area of ceramics in the early 1940s.
